In Iztapalapa, one of Mexico City’s most notorious districts, yearly a large Passion Play is held during the Holy Week, which has been proclaimed National Mexican Heritage. It is the most famous celebration of Mexico and it takes months of preparation to prepare the more than 2000 local actors for their roles during the week. It is common for people from the district to dress up as ‘Nazarenos’, people from Nazareth, and walk the processions on bare feet. On Holy Friday, the Nazarenos carry their crosses up the hill.
