I am a Dutch freelance photojournalist and anthropologist, focusing on social documentary, with a special emphasis on Latin America.
Being trained as both a researcher (MA in Psychology of Culture and Religion, 2003; PhD in Cultural Anthropology and Gender Studies, 2009) and as a photojournalist (MA in Photojournalism in Barcelona, 2016) I developed a special interest in projects at the intersections of both anthropology and photojournalism. In my photo reportages I use an anthropological perspective, both in the selection of themes as in the use of qualitative techniques.
Often the perspective of the marginalized is depicted in my photo stories. My camera is my passport to these worlds, and the means to temper the infinite curiosity and drive to understanding the world of different people around the world. Through my camera I try to transfer my view to those interested in these stories. My work has been published in a.o. El Jazeera, Deutsche Welle, El País, One World Magazine, Cuba Trade Magazine, Diari Ara, Tijdschirft voor Immaterieel Erfgoed, Volzin, Zij aan Zij and Vice.
